A Quiet Night – Autumn Concerts 2023

We presented our new programme A Quiet Night to audiences in London and Stockbridge in the Autumn of 2023.

The ancient service of Compline has provided comfort to Christian souls since the 4th century through its beautiful chant-based liturgy for the ending of the day. Beginning with the music of John Tavener, whose death 10 years ago is being marked in 2023, A Quiet Night journeys through music from across the centuries, using the texts of Compline to dwell on themes of light and darkness, life and death, prayer and praise. Works by Harris, Mendelssohn and Rachmaninov, as well as by living composers Cecilia McDowall and Neil Cox make for a rich tapestry of music which ends with Owain Park’s ‘Phos Hilaron’, a polychoral fantasia based on a Byzantine chant setting of Hail, Gladdening Light.
